Ten print & apply labelling machines - five duplex 515TD units for tray labelling and five 920PF models for pallet identification - have been custom built by Logopak to an exacting dairy industry specification for a major cream and yoghurt processor in the North of England.
The machines incorporate standard Logopak print engines and applicator systems, but are built within sealed stainless steel housings equipped with trap doors through which the applicators operate. These guard against potential ingress of water and product.
Inclined top covers for the housings and the absence of any horizontal surfaces, such as keyboards, help maintain hygiene.
Duplex tray labellers, with two applicators in a single housing, were chosen to provide continuous running, with one machine taking over automatically from the next when its label reel requires changeover or in the event of a fault.
"Intrinsic system reliability is a major issue, since large vats of product must be handled through packaging with no risk of stoppage," points out Logopak UK general manager Wilson Clark.
"In addition to providing duplex units, Logopak was able to demonstrate dependability in a number of exacting dairy applications, as well as brewing and chemicals."
Because of the shallow trays employed in transit packaging for cream and yoghurt the Logopak labellers have been equipped to handle narrow labels, just 30mm deep. However, the machines are able to produce 25mm high bar codes – 20 per cent smaller than standard – that nevertheless fully meet retailer legibility standards.
