Last March 2009 Novamont, Innovia Films, Cavanna and Sacchital took part in Ipack-Ima Show to promote the use and the environmental advantages of a new biodegradable and compostable packaging product.
Although packaging in general only contributes to a small amount of the environmental impact of most products, it is perceived by the consumer to have a significant effect. The global packaging industry is facing mounting economic pressures to reduce non-renewable waste, as more and more nations move to limit the commercial use of oil-based products. Moreover, modern legislation is increasingly encouraging recycling through a variety of methods including direct material recycling, energy recovery through incineration and more recently through Organic Recycling, more commonly known as ‘composting.’
Novamont, Innovia Films, Cavanna and Sacchital have developed an high specification pack to prove that good looking packs can also meet the environmental demands of both consumers and the food industry. They have created
a fully biodegradable and compostable flowpack that provides all the required specifications for packing biscuits with a reduction of fossil base materials: high seal strength and integrity, high barrier to oxygen and water vapour.
The packaging has been manufactured using a Cavanna energy saving packaging machine with ultrasonic technology. The compostable film consists of MaterBiR from Novamont and NatureFlexTMNK from Innovia Films, printed and laminated by Sacchital. This is an example of the best barrier solution available today made from compostable films. In fact the biscuit market remains a competitive industry targeting everyone from the luxury end, natural and organic through to functional and convenient. Packaging requirements for biscuits are demanding and must provide excellent barriers to oxygen and moisture vapour to ensure the product remains in perfect condition.
